CASAS MANUEL 3RD ANNUAL NATIVITY – FOR A GREAT CAUSE!

Friday the 20^th of the December witnessed a spectacular event hosted by Manuel Rodriguez of Casas Manuel Real Estate, Benijofar. The event was in aid of helping raise funds for a worthy cause. Manuel Menarguez Garcia (13 years) a local of Benijofar who was born with Lesch–Nyhan syndrome (LNS) – a devastating genetic disorder which affects a small number of males born each year (1 in 380.000). The disease affects the muscles and nervous system of the body. The result of this is that Manuel has no control over his body and requires constant assistance with everything he does. Even the smallest things we take for granted like brushing our hair are proves an impossible task.

However, what Manuel lacks in physical abilities he more that makes up for in character – with his joyous charisma and infectious smile he is a pleasure to know. Manuel is a local celebrity in the village of Benijofar and is regular seen out and about the Benijofar athletics club.

Last nights event was to help raise funds for both Manuel and his family. At the moment Manuel has to be physically carried around the house given that his wheelchair is impossible to navigate though doorways. The family are saving money for an overhead track system to be installed in the house meaning Manuel can be moved from room to room with a simple click of a button – making his and his family’s lives more comfortable and dignified. The system itself is quite expensive and unlike other European countries there isn’t much help around to help with local funding.

With the help of prizes donated from many local businesses in Benijofar we were able to host a wonderful raffle – with prizes ranging from legs of cured ham, a meal for two at El Gusto, hampers from the Benijofar Townhall, selection of wines, hair treatments, turkeys, through an oil and filter change from the Citroen garage the money and donations received was truly fantastic. The funds raised will be presented to Manuel’s family in the new year but despite the great generosity there is still a long way to go.

A big thank you must go out to all that helped make the night a great success. All the local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle, the fresh biscuits baked by the local baker, Charlotte’s mulled wine, the live entertainment which came from Torrevieja Pipes + drums (who despite the cooling temperatures donned their traditional attire), the Benijofar drummers who led the procession, the local Choir of Algorfa who provided a medley of traditional carols and even Pedro the local Donkey who was than happy sampling the mince pies!

All in all the night was a great success and next year will be even better!
